Master's Degree Programs

M.A. Teaching (MAT)

If you are an aspiring teacher, our MAT is the program for you. A preliminary teaching credential is included with options in one or more credentials to choose from. Choose from multiple subject, single subject, education specialist mild/moderate, or education specialist moderate/severe. 

 

M.A. Education

If you are a current teacher, counselor, or administrator, PLNU’s Master of Arts in education is the program for you. Choose from three concentrations:

M.A. Special Education

If you are currently working in the field of special education, the Master of Arts in Special Education will provide you with a deeper specialization in contemporary issues in the field. You are able to earn a clear education specialist credential along with your choice of an added authorization.

 

Preliminary Credentials

Preliminary Multiple Subject

You teach or aspire to teach elementary school. The preliminary credential can be earned as a part of the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program only.

Preliminary Single Subject

You teach or aspire to teach a single subject, most likely at the middle or high school level. The preliminary credential can be earned as a part of the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program only.

Preliminary Education Specialist

You aspire to teach students with mild/moderate or moderate/severe disabilities in a K-12 setting. Can only be earned as part of the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program.

Pupil Personnel Services (School Counseling)

This credential prepares you to work as a counselor in K-12 schools, providing comprehensive guidance and counseling services to students. Can only be earned as part of the Master of Arts in Education program.

Preliminary Administrative Services

This credential prepares you for administrative positions both at a school site or at a district level. Can be earned be earned alone or as part of the Master of Arts in Education program.

 

Clear Credentials

For those who need to clear their preliminary credential, we provide the following clear credentials.  These can be earned as stand-alone credentials or as part of the Master of Arts in Education, concentration Teaching and Learning program.

Clear Multiple/Single Subject

This credential clears your preliminary multiple and single subject credentials. It can be earned as a stand-alone credential or as part of the Master of Arts in Education, concentration Teaching and Learning program.

Clear Education Specialist

This credential clears your preliminary education specialist credentials. It can be earned as part of the Master of Arts in Special Education program.

Professional Clear Administrative Services

This stand-alone credential clears your preliminary administrative services credential.

 

Certificates

Teacher Leadership

If you are a current teacher, this 15-unit certificate will prepare you to serve as an instructional mentor, coach, department chair, clinical practice supervisor, or professional developer. Can be taken as either a stand-alone program or added to the Master of Arts in Education program, concentration Teaching and Learning.

Management of Instructional Design for Professionals

If you are interested in designing and managing professional development in your workplace, this 15-unit certificate will help prepare you for greater effectiveness in these areas. Can be taken as either a stand-alone program or added to the Master of Arts in Education program, concentration Teaching and Learning

Instructional Design with Technology

In this program, you will learn to use best practices in instructional design and technology to design, implement, and teach effective online courses. Can be taken as either a stand-alone program or added to the Master of Arts in Education program, concentration Teaching and Learning.

Diverse and Cross-Cultural Environments

This 15-unit program will prepare you to be a more effective educator and gain an in-depth understanding of complex cultural dynamics. Can be taken as either a stand-alone program or added to the Master of Arts in Education program, concentration Teaching and Learning.

Reading and Literacy

If you are a credentialed teacher, this 12-unit added authorization will give you a specialized certification to work with above-level or struggling readers in a PreK - 12 setting. Can be taken as either a stand-alone program or added to the Master of Arts in Education program, concentration Teaching and Learning.

Child Welfare and Attendance

This stand-alone program requires either a completed PPS Credential, concurrent enrollment in the PPS Program, or for non-PPS credential holders who can earn a certificate of completion.

 

Added Authorizations for Special Education

Autism

With the dramatically increased number of students diagnosed with ASD, this authorization can help you advance both your classroom practice and your career. This authorization can be earned on its own or as part of the Master of Arts in Special Education program.

Other Health Impaired

This authorization will help you employ best practices in your work with students with various health challenges. This authorization can be earned on its own or as part of the Master of Arts in Special Education program.

Traumatic Brain Injury

If you work with students who have experienced a traumatic brain injury, earning your added authorization can prepare you to better meet the needs of your students with TBI. This authorization can be earned on its own or as part of the Master of Arts in Special Education program.

Early Childhood Special Education

If you currently work with, or desire to work with, young children with special needs, earning your added authorization in Early Childhood Special Education can help you advance your practice and your career. You can earn your added authorization on its own or as part of the Master of Arts in Special Education program.

Emotional Disturbance

Gain understanding into what causes undesired behaviors and how to work positively with students who need help with emotional challenges. This authorization can be earned on its own or as part of the Master of Arts in Special Education program.

 

Beginning Teacher Support Assessment (BTSA)

Point Loma Nazarene University is proud to offer BTSA Participating Teachers and Support Providers the opportunity to earn 3 - 6 graduate units upon completion of your district's induction program. A reduced fee of $75.00 / unit is an amazing opportunity for graduate credit.
